David found out about the Kilmarnock Station Community Village from East Ayrshire Employability Service in September 2015 and he is one of our longest serving volunteers. He has witnessed the transformation of the station and number of volunteers, community groups and organisations increase from the summer of 2015 to now:
‘the coffee shop used to only be open in the morning and was very quiet’
‘now there are a lot more activities and people joining, as well as different groups’
What have been the positives of volunteering for you?
‘Meeting and communicating with new people from different backgrounds…increasing my confidence’
David is now a peer mentor and has helped other volunteers settle in and take on new challenges, using his own experience: ‘once you try something once, it’s easier the next time’
